Movement Essentials: Strength

Often, strength training is associated with body building physique changes and the strength of many elite athletes, but the benefits of strength training go far beyond aesthetics and strength itself. Engaging in regular strength training workouts offers a multitude of advantages and transformative effects that intricately connected to our overall health and well-being.

For many, weight loss is on the priority list as a matter of better managing risks of metabolic conditions such as high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol or triglycerides, and high blood sugar. Strength training plays a pivotal role in boosting our resting metabolic rate (the calories burned while our body is at rest). A consistent, progressive strength training program can will help increase lean muscle mass, allowing our bodies to continue burning more calories throughout the day, even when we are not actively exercising.

In addition to increasing our overall energy expenditure, research also shows that strength training helps improve blood glucose control by increasing insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake in the muscles, lowers blood pressure by increasing blood flow and improving the function of blood vessels. The enhanced fat metabolism, increased muscle mass, and improved insulin sensitivity combined with reduced inflammation creates a positive environment for improved blood lipid profiles.

Strength training offers a host of benefits and its impact on overall health and wellness is significant. Its impact on our metabolic health makes strength training an essential component of movement towards life-long wellness.
